The engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The J8 also features a unique air-intake system with special filtration and a hood-mounted snorkel that enables the J8 to wade in water up to 762 mm (30 in.) deep and tackle sandstorm conditions for up to five hours.

Available as a two-door with an extended pickup bed for personnel or equipment transport, or a four-door multipurpose vehicle, it may be produced with numerous vehicle-body and seating configurations in either right-hand- or left-hand-drive.
While not designed for front-line combat operations, the Jeep J8 is fully armour capable and excels in a variety of duties ranging from command vehicle to troop/cargo carrier, ambulance, communications vehicle and other duties – also making it suitable for civilian government applications. Heavy-duty bumpers with tow eyes allow the Jeep J8 to be easily transported by aeroplane or helicopter.
The Jeep J8 will be produced in a Chrysler LLC joint-venture facility in Cairo, Egypt, and will be available in spring 2008.
Jeep in the military
In June 1941, the U.S. Army received its first shipments of the Willys MA, the rugged 4x4 vehicle that came to be called the Jeep. This predecessor to today’s Jeep Wrangler would prove so vital to the Allies’ World War II effort that General Dwight D. Eisenhower declared that the war could not have been won without the Jeep vehicle.
Jeep vehicles have been produced for various militaries around the world. The Jeep J8 marks the start of Jeep’s renewed commitment to supply the defence community with the highest-quality 4x4 vehicles available anywhere in the world.

The new Porsche Cayenne GTS, which makes its world debut at the IAA Auto Show in Frankfurt, Germany, on September 11, features a specially developed chassis: it is the first Cayenne to offer the electronically-controlled damping system, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), with steel springs. This combination, which also lowers the Cayenne by 24mm, was previously reserved exclusively for Porsche sports cars.
Furthermore, the car boasts an enhanced version of the direct fuel injection (DFI) 4.8-litre V8 petrol engine. The engine in the Cayenne GTS yields 405bhp (298 kW) at 6,500rpm – 20bhp more than in the Cayenne S. Maximum torque remains unchanged at 500Nm at 3,500rpm.
In order to further exploit this horsepower increase, the GTS comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox and a shorter axle final drive ratio than the Cayenne S (4.1:1 as opposed to 3.55:1). The Cayenne GTS can thus accelerate from 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in just 6.1 seconds, precisely 0.5 seconds quicker than the Cayenne S.
The Cayenne GTS can be specified with the Tiptronic S six-speed automatic transmission, in which guise it offers an average fuel consumption of 20.3mpg (13.9 litres/100 km) in accordance with EU standards.
The Cayenne GTS is fitted with Porsche Traction Management (PTM) permanent all-wheel drive and the adaptive PASM chassis as standard. Air suspension is available as an option, as is the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active anti-roll system which enhances the handling and ride comfort further still. Newly-developed 12-way adjustable sports seats and a mix of leather and Alcantara upholstery creates a sporty interior ambience.
The new Cayenne GTS is instantly recognizable: the front and rear share styling cues with the Cayenne Turbo, and the striking 14mm wheel-arch extensions offer plenty of space for the 21-inch alloy rims with 295/35 R21 tyres fitted as standard. Two new colours have also been reserved exclusively for the GTS: GTS Red and Nordic Gold Metallic.
The new Porsche Cayenne GTS will be priced from £54,350, including a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and a Porsche Driving Experience programme. The car will be on sale in the UK and Ireland from February 2008.

Chrysler Group will show the four new models that will be launched in the UK in 2008 at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
The Jeep Cherokee is all-new and will launch in the UK in May 2008. On-road ride and handling have been improved and refined with a new independent front suspension, new five-link rear suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. The Cherokee will feature an updated 2.8-litre diesel engine, the Selec-Trac II full-time four-wheel drive system plus the choice of a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearbox.
Peter Lambert, Managing Director of Chrysler UK, said: “The Cherokee started everything off for Jeep when we first launched our brands here in 1993. Since then the Cherokee has become an off-road icon in the UK with more than 50,000 sold so far.
“The new Cherokee’s exterior has been redesigned and now takes on a more rugged, classic Jeep look. Inside, cargo and storage space has increased and seat comfort has been improved, while the new optional ‘Sky Slider’ full-length canvas roof is sure to attract customers wanting the open air benefits of a convertible combined with the space and safety features of a family SUV.”
The all-new Chrysler Grand Voyager, the Chrysler Sebring Cabrio and the Dodge Journey will also be on show on the Chrysler Group stand.
The Chrysler Grand Voyager will launch in early 2008 with an all-new exterior and a new interior design with Stow ‘N Go seating together with an updated 2.8-litre diesel engine.
A host of new features will make the new seven-seat model the ultimate people carrier. Heated first and second row seats; rear-view interior conversation mirror; a removable torch in the rear quarter panel; electric windows in the power sliding second-row doors and movable LED reading lamps will all help make the new Grand Voyager very family-friendly.
The Chrysler Sebring Cabrio will be launched in the UK in early 2008 with a petrol and diesel engine. All UK models will feature a folding soft roof that folds into three sections and stows in less than 30 seconds. The automatic roof system features automatic latching, a powered tonneau cover and remote control via the key fob.
Peter Lambert added: “The Sebring Cabrio is a large four seat two-door convertible that will offer outstanding value for money compared to the competition in a stunning package. The Cabrio is three inches longer than the saloon and this means that despite the folding roof there is enough cargo space to hold two golf bags when the roof is retracted – or four golf bags when the roof is up!”
The all-new 2008 Dodge Journey is a seven seat crossover MPV that combines the space and practicality of an MPV with the style of an SUV and the ride, handling and fuel efficiency of a family saloon. It will launch in mid-2008 and effectively replaces the Voyager in the Chrysler Group model range.

Now that it's been confirmed the BMW X6 will make it's world debut in Frankfurt next week, those tasked with keeping the prototypes under cover have been given the green light to show a little more skin... err, metal. These newest shots don't leave much to the imagination, giving us a very clear view of both the front and rear of BMW's SAV.
The front clip has a decidedly sportier appearance than its big brother the X5, with larger air dams, kidney grilles and fog lamp recesses. The sloping roofline out back is as extreme as we expected, and the small spoiler integrates smoothly into the hatch.
Frankfurt is less than a week away, so, as always, watch this space.

– Fun, Flexible and Fuel-efficient
* Car-like driving experience and economy
* Clever features such as "Flex-Fix" bike carrier
* Prices range from £19,995 to £27,795
It’s a dilemma faced by thousands of car buyers every year – they want the style and practicality of a 4x4, but feel unable to justify the compromised dynamics, economy and performance of a big off-roader.
Now Vauxhall can offer a car which fulfils all their needs – the stylish Antara. The technically sophisticated five-seater combines dynamic, stylish design with intelligent four-wheel drive, high levels of flexibility, generous interior space, a raised driving position and clever features such as "Flex-Fix".
Two transversally-mounted engines with four valves per cylinder are available for the Antara – a petrol and a diesel. The entry-level unit is a 2.4-litre, 140PS four-cylinder petrol with two overhead cams and a balancer shaft to ensure smoothness and refinement. Most buyers in this market want diesels though, so Vauxhall expects the 150PS, 2.0-litre common-rail turbo-diesel to be the top seller, taking more than 90 percent of sales,
Both engines are linked to an intelligent active four-wheel drive system which combines the benefits of front-wheel drive - such as fuel economy, predictable handling and increased driving dynamics - with the grip and security of permanent four-wheel drive when it is needed.
This innovative system features an electronically-controlled electro-hydraulic differential which ensures optimal torque distribution between the front and rear axles in all situations. The drivetrain is fully integrated in the ABS and ESP systems, enhancing vehicle control and active safety.
The comprehensive standard safety package includes front airbags, thorax/pelvis side airbags for driver and front passenger, head curtain airbags for the front and outer rear seats as well as a crash-optimised chassis with four load paths. Other safety features include three-point safety belts and head restraints for all five seats. The front seats are equipped with seat-belt tensioners and belt-force limiters. The outer rear seats come with ISOFIX mountings for fast and secure fitting of child seats.

The stylish good looks of the Antara, both inside and out, are matched by a quality feel which will mean that owners of larger 4x4s will be able to downsize to an Antara without feeling short changed.
In fact, the Antara’s price and equipment will leave buyers feeling positively flush, with the sort of luxuries which would cost thousands when added as options to other SUVs.
The entry-level E starts at just under £20,000 but includes four-wheel-drive, ESP, a decent control system, air conditioning, alarm, front fog lights and 17-inch alloys. Diesel versions even have self-levelling suspension and a trailer stability program, which automatically recalibrates the ESP to allow for towing.
Moving up the range, and the S gains Electronic Climate Control, heated front seats, trip computer, cruise control, a rear seat centre armrest, chilled glovebox, 18-inch alloys, automatic headlights and wipers and chrome door handles.
The flagship SE is arrives fully laden with the sort of equipment. There’s a DVD-based satellite navigation system with a six CD changer, leather seat and door facings, a Bluetooth mobile phone system, Xenon headlamps, electro-chromatic dimming rear-view and door mirrors, a tyre pressure monitoring system and parking distance sensors.
With this level of kit fitted as standard, there’s not much left for an options list. Metallic paint is an extra £400, but it’s the innovative FlexFix system which is expected to capture the headlines when it’s available in early 2008.
With FlexFix, transporting bikes is super-simple. Instead of having to mount a bicycle carrier on the tow ball or roof rack, Flex-Fix simply pulls out of the rear bumper and is ready to go. No parts need to be stored in the garage or loft and there are no tools needed. What’s more, at £475 it costs only a little more than conventional bike carriers.
The integrated rack can transport up to two bicycles, stows away almost invisibly in the rear bumper and can be easily pulled out like a drawer. The Flex-Fix carrier’s unlocking lever is located directly on the edge of the luggage compartment sill, ensuring easy access even when the boot is full.
Design
* Expressive design language from Antara GTC concept
* As stylish looks and high quality materials
* Takes up little more road space than an Astra
The new Antara’s design origin is clearly linked to the Antara GTC (Gran Turismo Crossover) concept car, which was the star of the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show. The design language of this off-road coupé concept car is echoed in the production version.
At first glance, the Antara’s distinctive design character has bold contrasts. While the lower section clearly displays the new SUV’s robust nature, the body’s striking lines have the look of a sporty, muscular car. It’s certainly a far cry from the boxy, utilitarian 4x4 which has been previously seen in the class.
The designers visualised the Antara as a versatile vehicle that is both dynamic and comfortable for long journeys. Carefully crafted details such as the crease on the bonnet and the grille confidently emphasise the car’s high quality and brand identity.

With its compact dimensions (length x width x height: 4575 x 1850 x 1704 millimeters), the crossover takes up little more space than a mid-size passenger car such as an Astra estate (4515x1753x1496), making parking in tight spaces easy.
The sporty, sloping roofline also echoes the Antara GTC concept car’s dynamic design, which earned it the title “Concept of the Year” in 2005 from the Autocar magazine. With a sporty downward swing, the silhouette tapers into sleek side air vents. These exciting side accents flow into lines traced by the roof railings and side windows.
This look continues to the Antara’s rear. A striking chrome crossbar not only enhances the stylish look, it also emphasises the vehicle’s width and stability. This is underlined by the large curved rear window, which boasts frameless fitted glass that extends to the D-pillar – a design feature that also improves rear visibility and lets plenty of light into the interior. Finally, large three-dimensional rear lights set at an angle make the Antara unmistakable from the rear. Sculpted into the shoulder line, they create a smooth transition into the Antara’s profile.
Interior: Versatile and comfortable
* Luxury look and feel, high levels of equipment
* Versatile storage options and FlexOrganiser for luggage compartment
* Standard CD-Radio with seven speakers
Step inside a Vauxhall Antara and it will seem like a pleasant change from some of the cheap-looking and cramped interiors which are offered by some other cars in the small 4x4 sector.
The interior brings new levels of style and quality to the class. Contoured seats reflect the Antara's dynamic character while all instruments and operating controls are ergonomically placed and clearly laid out.
Eye-catching interior features include three large round air vents on the centre console and a distinctively shaped ‘grab-handle’ handbrake.
And it’s not just the quality feel and stylish appearance which will please buyers. Numerous compartments, as well as many clever and practical features make the car a pleasure to live with everyday.
There’s a real sense of spaciousness created by the elevated seating position and large glazed surfaces too, and the Antara doesn’t just seem spacious: measurements confirm that passengers enjoy plenty of space. With 933 millimetres of rear legroom, for example, the Antara is at the top of its segment.
With the luggage compartment cover in place the Antara offers 370 litres of boot space. Cargo capacity increases to 865 litres with the rear bench seat folded down and up to 1420 litres when loaded to the roof. The rear seat back can be split 60:40 and folded down.
A storage box under the load floor ensures practical organization of the luggage compartment, as does the optional FlexOrganiser system, which is already familiar from the Astra and Vectra estate models. Nets, dividing walls, rods and hooks can be snapped into two rails on each of the side walls of the Antara's luggage compartment, allowing the boot to be separated into different sections to protect the cargo from shifting or being damaged during the journey.
However, the designers did not only focus on the boot when they considered the newcomer’s storage. The Antara features numerous compartments and boxes throughout its interior, including a drawer under the passenger seat, sunglasses holder in the roof liner, nets on the front seat backs, a car park ticket holder to the right of the steering wheel, a net on the centre console, compartments in the front and rear central arm rests, as well as storage boxes around the rear wheel arches in the boot.
The integrated rear carrier Flex-Fix boasts the unbeatable practicality that has become a Vauxhall trademark and is especially important in this segment. Flex-Fix has the potential to set the new benchmark in flexible exterior transportation, just as the Zafira’s “Flex7” does for interior seating systems. In typical Vauxhall style, its full on-board functionality eliminates the need for cumbersome assembly, dismantling or storage of parts. Flex-Fix is also featured in the new Corsa and is available as an option for the Antara. It stows away almost invisibly under the rear bumper and can easily be pulled out to carry up to two bicycles.
For on-board entertainment, the Antara features a standard MP3-compatible stereo CD Radio, seven speakers, remote controls on the steering wheel and a roof antenna to provide excellent radio reception. The DVD 100 navigation system, which is standard on the Antara SE, features a large 7.5-inch colour info display, as well as mobile phone Bluetooth connection.
Chassis: Car-like handling and all-wheel-drive grip
* Intelligent four-wheel drive for optimum handling
* Multi-link rear suspension for exceptional road-holding
* Trailer stability system increases safety when towing
With its agile handling, precise speed-dependant power steering and stiff chassis, the Antara is clearly designed as a dynamic on-road vehicle with off-road abilities.
The McPherson suspension in front and a four-link suspension in the rear provide a high-quality chassis concept similar to that of the acclaimed Vauxhall Vectra and Signum models.
The front struts are mounted on a highly rigid subframe which guarantees precise wheel alignment and also compensates for lateral loads.
The compact four-link rear axle utilises three transverse and one longitudinal link to locate the rear wheels. This independent set-up makes it possible to optimise rear wheel camber and, compared the more traditional beam axle at the rear, the result is a more controlled ride.
All diesel-engined Antaras also feature a self-levelling device. Instead of the conventional shock absorbers, a regulating system with a pump integrated in the shock absorbers, reservoir, sensor, control mechanism and damper is fitted at both rear wheels and automatically adapts the Antara to loads and trailers.
Buyers who plump for factory-fit towing pack will also discover that Antara will cleverly recognise when a trailer is plugged in and automatically calibrate the ESP system to compensate. A yaw-rate sensor immediately detects any yawing tendencies in the car-trailer combination and automatically stabilises it again with brake intervention or by closing the throttle.
The Antara E comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels (with 235/60 R17 tyres) and the top S and SE Antara variants have 18-inch alloys (with 235/55 R18s). A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is standard on the SE and monitors via sensors at each valve and activates a warning signal in the info display when more than 0.3 bar is lost.
The Antara’s intelligent active four-wheel drive system combines the benefits of front-wheel drive - such as low fuel consumption and easy maneuvering - with those of four-wheel drive. Under normal conditions, the Antara is a pure front-wheel drive car. However, power can be quickly and seamlessly distributed between the front and rear axle at a ratio of up to 50:50 when needed. The key element for this function is an electronically controlled, electro-magnetically operated, electro-hydraulic differential on the rear axle. The compact and light four-wheel drive system is fully integrated in the ABS and ESP systems and supports the driver effectively in all driving situations, such as during heavy acceleration.
The braking system comprises large, ventilated disc brakes and a modern four-channel ABS. The ABS hydraulics also takes over the brake assist function if emergency braking occurs (Hydraulic Brake Assist, HBA). The modern ESP system boasts numerous additional functions that further increase active safety, including Descent Control System (DCS), a standard feature in all Antaras. DCS allows the vehicle to safely maintain a constant speed even down steep inclines without the driver needing to brake.
During winter holidays on snow-covered roads, for instance, the system ensures that the car does not exceed a pre-selected speed, thereby remaining easy to control. It operates at speeds of up to 30 mph.
If the driver selects first gear while stationary (or "D" for automatic) before a steep slope, then allows the vehicle to roll forward without using the accelerator pedal, and then presses the DCS button, the system will maintain a maximum downhill speed of 6 mph and keeps this speed constant through brake intervention at the front wheels.
If the Antara is approaching a steep downhill slope at a certain speed in a gear higher than first (also valid for automatics), the driver can activate DCS by operating the brake pedal as the vehicle starts to descend. The system then reduces the vehicle’s speed to 10 mph and maintains this speed to the bottom of the slope. DCS also operates in reverse gear. In this case, a constant 5 mph is maintained.
It is also possible to accelerate or decelerate slightly when driving down a slope with DCS activated. When the driver removes his foot from the accelerator or brake pedal, the system returns the vehicle to its pre-selected speed. If the system is activated at a significantly higher speed, the braking effect is immediately noticeable. At the same time, a clearly audible sound informs the driver about the activities of the ESP system’s control unit, which regulates the instant brake intervention.
Development & Quality control
Integral Approach to Quality
* GM “Zero defects policy” applies worldwide
* Extensive test program around the globe
* Clever designs for low maintenance and repair costs
The new Antara, which is manufactured by General Motors Korea, benefits from the strategy of maintaining highly developed, globally consistent standards. The “GM Global Manufacturing System” (GM GMS), implemented throughout the world, is based on five key concepts: "zero defects policy", standardisation, continuous improvement, short cycle times and workforce involvement.
New models undergo demanding durability testing long before series production begins. During the new SUV’s development phase, for example, prototypes and pre-production models covered over three million test miles on testing grounds and tracks worldwide. The test centres in Pferdsfeld, Germany and Millbrook in Bedfordshire played a central role in the Antara’s chassis tuning and durability testing.
In addition to these tests, it is often a combination of material and workmanship details that create a Vauxhall model’s high-quality look, because the car should also appeal to the driver’s – and passengers’ – senses. The new Antara’s good looks are eye-catching from any perspective.
The Antara also sounds good, for example when the doors close with a satisfying click. And it feels good, because the materials are pleasing to the touch and all switch and button movements are precise and well-defined.
A team of scent experts even successfully developed the new Antara’s olfactory qualities. All interior components were analysed and optimised at a laboratory in Rüsselsheim, Germany, resulting in a pleasant scent without odours from plastic parts. The scent experts were recently able to confirm their success when the very first Antaras were delivered.
Plenty of Vauxhall know-how also went into the Antara’s repair-friendly design. Drivers benefit from this in several ways: through low servicing costs, short repair times and favourable insurance premiums.
Construction details that help minimise costs for minor front and rear damage include easily-replaceable bolted subframe radiator supports, bumper fascias that can be changed quickly, and a special repair feature for headlamp mounting brackets. If a headlamp’s plastic holder tears during a minor collision, the headlamp does not necessarily need to be replaced. For such cases, Vauxhall offers a special repair set with a new holder for the Antara, as it does for other models.
Relatively expensive engine components, such as the radiator and the air conditioning condenser, are well protected behind impact force limiters. The bumpers also have large surfaces, and energy absorption is helped by crash boxes bolted behind them. Should an accident occur, a repair method specially developed for the Antara also keeps costs down and enables partial replacement of the vehicle floor if necessary.
In addition, Vauxhall employs preventative measures in other areas, such as full galvanization of all body sections prone to corrosion. And the new Antara will seldom see the inside of a workshop, thanks to inspection intervals of 20,000 miles or one year, as well as many completely maintenance-free components. These include the diesel particulate filter in the diesel models and hydraulic valve lifters in the 2.4-litre petrol engine.
Powertrain: Two engines with 140 or 150PS
* Powerful and modern common-rail diesel
* Maintenance-free diesel particulate filter as standard
* Rugged petrol engine with balancer shafts for refinement
The Antara is available with a choice of two engines – a petrol or a diesel. Both are transversally mounted, feature four-valve technology and are coupled to a five-speed manual transmission as standard
The newly-developed 2.0 CDTi engine with an output of 150PS is expected to take more than 90 percent of sales in the UK. This engine includes newest generation common-rail technology with up to 1600 bar injection pressure, an aluminum cylinder head, a turbocharger with variable vane geometry and a maintenance-free diesel particulate filter,
This particulate filter consists of a solid, honeycomb-shaped ceramic body with microscopic channels. Soot particles collect on the surface of these channels and are regularly burnt off to prevent the filter blocking. Instead of using a complex system of fuel additives to remove these particles, multiple targeted injections raise the diesel engine’s exhaust-gas temperature to 600 degrees Celsius - the soot particulate’s ignition temperature - for the duration of the burning process in the filter. All this happens without the driver even being aware.
The diesel can be mated to a five-speed automatic transmission instead of the standard five-speed manual gearbox. Thanks to ActiveSelect, this automatic transmission also offers manual gear selection, as well as the choice of a winter driving program.
With both transmissions it delivers excellent performance. Accelerating from 50 to 75 mph in fifth gear takes only 12.6 seconds (automatic: 9.7 seconds). According to government figures, consumption is only 37.7mpg on the combined cycle (automatic: 29.4mpg). In combination with the 65-litre fuel tank, this provides an operating range of around 540 miles. Top speed is 111mph (automatic: 108 mph).
The new diesel engine was co-developed by GM Korea and GM Powertrain, and is produced in Gunsan, South Korea. Up to 250,000 engines can be produced annually in the 19,200 square metre plant, where regular production began in March 2006.
Vauxhall re-enters four-wheel drive segment
* Crossover segment has highest growth rates in UK
* As diverse as its target groups and equipment versions
Traditionally, the off-road segment consisted of vehicles which fulfilled a specific need. Very few people would put up with the compromised dynamics and high fuel consumption of a pre-1980s off roader purely for fashion of occasional leisure use.
Since then though, a sucession of ‘fun and fashion’ 4x4s together with advances in technology, have brought four-wheel-drive to a whole new generation of buyers. One of the first was the Frontera. Unveiled in 1991, the Frontera was one of the first SUV models ever and dominated its segment in the UK and Europe for many years.
Unlike the new Antara, which features a unibody monocoque design typical of passenger cars, the Frontera had a ladder frame chassis. In total, around 285,000 units of the classic robust 4x4 were sold in Europe up until it ceased production in 2003.
Even a decade ago the off-road segment represented just 4.1 percent of the market in the UK; by 2006 that figure had grown to 7.66 percent. Registrations dropped off slightly last year as buyers awaited the arrival of significant new models, and sales are expected to rise again this year as those cars reach showrooms.
The so-called ‘fun & fashion’ sector of the market in which the Antara will sit makes up around half of all 4x4 sales, and within this two-thirds are private buyers and just a third are fleet cars. Diesels make up 63.8 percent of sales in the sector, but this is expected to be above 90 percent for the Antara.
There is a higher percentage of automatics bought in the segment too, and Vauxhall expects 35 percent of buyers to opt for a self-shifter. The Antara has a rare option in this class too – the highly-desirable combination of a diesel auto

SEAT ANNOUNCES UK PRICES FOR ALTEA FREETRACK 4 -
Categories: Manufacturers, New Vehicles -

@ 08:34:50 pm

* First all-road car from SEAT, on sale Saturday 20th October
* Two versions – 200 PS TSI and 170 PS TDI – priced at £20,495 and £21,395 RRP
* Four-wheel drive, increased ride height, tough-looking styling
* Comprehensive standard equipment, including rear seat multimedia system
‘Auto Emoción’ is moving from race track to ‘freetrack’ this October, as a rugged new all-road car from SEAT goes on sale – the Altea freetrack 4. And to whet appetites in advance, SEAT UK is today announcing prices for this exciting new vehicle.
Two models will be available, with a brace of powerful engines – the 2.0-litre TSI 200 PS and the 2.0-litre TDI 170 PS, priced at £20,495 and £21,395 respectively. Sitting at the very top of the Altea family, the Altea freetrack 4 is the most lavishly equipped of the lot, with a plethora of equipment fitted as standard.
SEAT Altea freetrack 4 pricing:
- Model Power (PS) RRP on the road
- 2.0-litre TSI 200 £20,495
- 2.0-litre TDI 170 £21,395
The sophisticated multimedia system is a highlight, comprising a roof-mounted 7” screen with RCA connection that allows a link to a DVD player, video games, a laptop computer and even an MP3 player. This way the sound is transmitted through the car’s stereo system.
Further standard-fit elements on the Altea freetrack 4 include dual zone climate control, rain sensor wipers, parking sensors, cruise control, trip computer, light sensor headlights, and a CD MP3 stereo with steering-wheel mounted controls. Rear door window blinds are also fitted as standard, which are stored neatly within the door when not required. Safety equipment includes ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme), six airbags and a tyre pressure warning system.
The Altea freetrack 4 is the first SEAT designed to be driven off-road. To this end, it features Haldex-type four-wheel drive transmission, an extra 40 mm of ground clearance and 4x4-inspired styling touches over and above the Altea XL, on which the new model is based.
Performance is in line with SEAT’s sporty image: for example, the 2.0 TSI has a maximum speed of 133 mph, with 0 to 62 mph taking 7.5 seconds, while the 2.0 TDI boasts figures of 127 mph and 8.7 seconds respectively. Despite their turn of speed, the two models’ frugality is impressive – not just for all-road vehicles, but in absolute terms – with respective figures of 30.1 mpg and 41.5 mpg.
Visually, the Altea freetrack 4 is very striking. The most distinctive features are the imposing protective front and rear bumpers, which are linked to each other by a similar moulding that runs below the waistline. New and exclusive 17” alloy wheels and larger diameter tyres complete the look.
The newcomer’s Haldex-type transmission features a hydro-mechanical connection and electronic control. This flexible arrangement means that in normal use, power is fully transferred to the front wheels (which helps improve fuel economy), but as traction deteriorates, up to 50% can be automatically distributed to the rear as required.
The Altea freetrack 4 is also more than up to dealing with the tough task of being the main family car. With a huge 490 litre boot, picnic tables, roof rails and a split rear-seat that can move back and forth by as much as 16 cm, this SEAT is great for not just Mum and Dad, but the whole tribe.

In readiness for the launch of the all new X-TRAIL on 1 September, Nissan has announced a tempting £700 consumer offer increasing the value of the Sport eXpedition and Aventura eXplorer models along with a low rate finance offer of 5.9% APR, which will be available across the whole range.
Adding kit such as DVD satellite navigation with voice recognition, colour rear parking camera, intelligent key and chrome door handles to the SPORT or DVD satellite navigation with voice recognition, colour rear parking camera and xenon headlamps to the Aventura would normally cost an additional £1700 but for a limited time this cost is reduced to £1000. This means that a Sport eXpedition 2.5 now starts from £21,695 and the Aventura eXplorer from £23,695 for the 2.5 petrol engine. If diesel is your preferred choice then add a further £800 for the 150PS 2.0dCi.
Financing the purchase of a new X-TRAIL has been made more attractive with a low interest rate offer of just 5.9% APR if purchased through Nissan’s own PCP finance scheme known as ‘Preferences’. This means TREK 2.0dCi payments can start as low as £259* per month spread over 36 months based on a low deposit of 23%.
For a further £20 per month the highly equipped SPORT grade can be driven away. This model provides an array of extras over the TREK including ALL-MODE 4x4-i which is the intelligent version of the 4x4 system that not only transfers from 2wd to 4wd when conditions sense it is required but now also features Electronic Stability Control (ESP), Uphill Start Support (USS) and Downhill Drive Support (DDS). The SPORT also comes with 17” alloys, front fog lamps, panoramic sunroof, cruise control, privacy glass, speed sensing auto lock, rain sensing wipers, auto headlamps and a 6 x CD auto-changer with 6 speakers.
The new X-TRAIL is available to order now, along with both these offers, from any Nissan Dealer.

‘RAGING BULL’ SPECIAL EDITION TO SCORE WITH L200 BUYERS -
Categories: Manufacturers, New Vehicles -
Ian
@ 10:25:44 pm

Mitsubishi Motors UK has joined forces with England rugby captain Phil Vickery, and Raging Bull Limited, to launch a special edition L200 pick-up. Badged the L200 Raging Bull to tie in with Vickery’s exclusive performance clothing company, the new model comes with £2,000 worth of extras for free.
Only available in vibrant Aztec Red and as a Double Cab vehicle, the L200 Raging Bull includes a number of unique features. Most obvious is the dramatic Raging Bull motif at the base of the driver and passenger doors. It’s also stitched into the back support of the leather front seats, and stamped into the front door entry guards.
The front is defined by striking chrome resin guard inserts and a stunning chromed sports grille, flanked by stainless steel headlamp and indicator bezels. At the rear is a stylish step bumper to aid entry into the load bed, and rear stainless steel lamp bezels. The L200 Raging Bull is fitted with functional load liner – made of durable ribbed black plastic – with an integrated and lockable storage box against the cab’s rear bulkhead.
Interior features that are standard on the L200 Raging Bull include Trafficmaster’s award-winning Smartnav navigation system with integrated dashboard touch screen.
The L200 Raging Bull is based on the Warrior model, which means equipment levels are already high. Externally there are stainless steel sidesteps, chromed door handles, graphite grey wheel arch extensions and 17-inch alloys. Inside owners benefit from climate control air-conditioning, leather steering wheel and shift knobs, privacy glass and a six-speaker audio system.
Power comes from the L200’s acclaimed 2.5-litre 136PS DI-D common-rail diesel engine. It’s linked to a Super Select 4WD system via a five-speed manual gearbox, and comes with Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control (M-ASTC). The L200 Raging Bull is also available with a four-speed automatic transmission.
Vickery commented: “The L200 is powerful, tough and rugged, yet great to look at. The synergy between the L200, rugby and Raging Bull’s performance clothing makes great sense. Combining style, action and attention to detail, we see great potential in partnering with Mitsubishi as we introduce our new ranges of sports and leisure clothing, later this year.”
“We are delighted to be associated with Phil Vickery and his Raging Bull company,” said Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors UK, Jim Tyrrell. “Mitsubishi has long been associated with active sports, in particular with rugby. The L200 is a perfect vehicle for this association, being tough and versatile with rugged good looks, just like Phil!”
The L200 Raging Bull costs just £19,249. That’s £2,000 more than the standard Warrior, but with almost £4,000 worth of extras included it represents excellent value for money. There will be an initial batch of 500 units.

Imagine you're overweight. A friend of yours tells you about a diet he got great results from. If you do the one simple thing he did, you'll lose around 1,000 pounds. You'd try it, wouldn't you? That's what's in store for the next generation Range Rover, with plans to give the Posh-UV an all-aluminum chassis.
The newer, lighter Range won't arrive until 2012, but engineers have sought approval to build it with a rivet-bonded aluminum monocoque. To do so, it would employ lessons and technology from the Jaguar XJ sedan. In light of the cost involved, such construction would also be spread throughout the Land Rover line. Weight savings for the Range Rover would be around 40-percent, equating to anywhere from 300-500 kg over the current version, a change that would seem to be all pro and no con. Engines would also be borrowed from Jag -- the same lumps expected to power the XF sedan. The 350-450 HP engines would go a lot further in an aluminum Range, as would a speculated hybrid version.
A decision on the aluminum option hasn't been made yet, but it is expected to get the go-ahead.

Two of the most striking cars to ever hit the streets will be launched this summer when the new Dodge Nitro SUV and Dodge Avenger saloon arrive in the UK.
Peter Lambert added: “In a world of mostly bland competitors, the Dodge Nitro has the design, engineering and performance to inspire drivers and shake up the mid-size SUV market.
“The Nitro boasts excellent overall performance and competitive fuel economy, as well as a comprehensive range of safety, security and convenience features including the new ‘Load ‘N Go’ rear floor cargo system.”
The Dodge Nitro will offer a choice of one petrol and one diesel engine together with a 4x4 drivetrain to provide customers with a safe, confident drive on slippery or loose surfaces and in poor weather conditions such as heavy rain and snow.
The all-new 2.8-litre common-rail turbo diesel engine is a four-cylinder, in-line engine available with a six-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic transmission and is expected to account for more than 90 per cent of sales in the UK. Maximum power is 174 bhp and peak torque is 339 lb.-ft with a fuel economy figure of 30.1 mpg*. The 3.7-litre SOHC V-6 petrol engine with an automatic gearbox provides performance of 203 bhp and 232 lb.-ft. of torque.
3-DOOR DIESEL MODEL JOINS SUZUKI’S GRAND VITARA LINE-UP -
Categories: Manufacturers, Equipment, New Vehicles -

@ 10:05:19 am

Customers opting for a diesel powered Suzuki Grand Vitara have until now been restricted in their choice to the larger 5-door bodystyle, but a new 3-door model joins the range from April, priced at a competitive £14,999 on-the-road.
Unlike its petrol-engined 3-door sibling, which is essentially a ‘soft roader’, the new 1.9 DDiS Grand Vitara adopts the drivetrain of the manual transmission 5-door models and supplements permanent four-wheel drive with a centre differential lock and a low range to ensure serious and outstanding off road capability. It can therefore tackle tough, muddy off-road conditions with ease, while the system’s four different modes are easily selected via a dash-mounted rotary switch.
Power output from the Renault-supplied intercooled and turbocharged engine is 129 PS, and a hefty 221 lb ft (300 Nm) of torque peaking at 2000 rpm delivers reassuring ability in both on and off-road driving situations. Such output doesn’t penalise fuel economy either, and the 1.9 DDiS 3 door Grand Vitara achieves 38.2 mpg on the combined cycle, while carbon dioxide emissions are 195 g/km.
In line with other Grand Vitara models, equipment levels are generous, and include climate control air conditioning, front electric windows, an integrated radio/CD player with steering wheel mounted audio controls, tinted glass, tilt adjustable steering, reclining rear seats, heated and folding door mirrors, immobiliser, alloys and front fogs. Outstanding safety credentials include front, side and curtain airbags for front seat occupants, plus curtain airbags in the rear.
Thanks to a unique lightweight monocoque body combined with a stiff, built-in ladder frame, rigidity matches the most traditional of off roaders. In contrast to the 5-door model’s understated elegance, the 3-door with its ‘crouched’ muscular form projects a more sporty persona. A relatively long wheelbase has permitted a roomy cabin with front and rear legroom comparable to that of models from a higher segment.
The 1.9 DDiS 3-door joins a line-up comprising 1.6-litre VVT and VVT+ 3-door manual models; 2.0-litre 16v 5-door manual and automatic models; and 1.9 DDiS 5-door manual model.

An Offer to ‘Choose Your Adventure’ and an Online Interactive Film Drive the Marketing Campaign for the All-New 2007 Jeep(R) Patriot
* Unique film helps viewers experience the features and capabilities of the Jeep Patriot * TV spots, print ads and online ads are among other elements launching March 15 * ‘March Madness’ media will play a big role in the campaign
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — For the second time in as many months, the Jeep(R) brand has created a cutting-edge Internet experience designed to provide consumers an online immersion into the features and capabilities of the all-new 2007 Jeep Patriot compact sport-utility vehicle (SUV).
“Wolf” TV Spot (May have to copy and paste web address into your browser): http://wm.world.mii-/ streaming.net/media/convergent/dcstudios/VIDEO/2007/mar/patriot_wolf.wmv
In February the Jeep brand and Marvel Comics unveiled “The Patriot Factor,” an online adventure comic book whose story line is being provided by consumers at www.patriotadventure.com.
Today, as part of the nationwide marketing launch for the Jeep Patriot, the brand introduced “The Way Beyond Trail,” an online interactive film. Consumers can join three characters who drive a Jeep Patriot while searching for a buried treasure. Consumers directly impact the evolution of the plot through their viewing choices, making “The Way Beyond Trail” a unique and truly interactive experience.
Product features of the Jeep Patriot are integral to the story line. In one scene, for example, the lead female character invites a group of people to a tailgate party by cranking up the music on the Patriot’s two articulating speakers packaged in the liftgate.
“‘The Way Beyond Trail’ and ‘The Patriot Factor’ combine the timeless magic of story-telling with the power and reach of the Internet,” Jay Kuhnie, Director - Jeep Communications, said. “Both applications allow us to engage prospective customers of the Jeep Patriot in an environment that is interactive and entertaining, which resonates well with them.”
“The Way Beyond Trail,” which goes live on March 15 at www.patriotadventure.com, is a unique element of the marketing campaign for the 2007 Jeep Patriot. The campaign also includes two new 30-second TV spots, print ads, online advertising, a Hispanic campaign, product integration, events, direct mail, billboards and other out-of-home elements.
Overall, the theme of the Jeep Patriot marketing campaign, “choose your adventure,” is reinforced within the major elements of the campaign. For example, “The Way Beyond Trail” has 44 scenes (ranging from 15-30 seconds in length) and participants choose their path through the adventure.
Even the print ads allow readers to choose how they will interact with them.
Ultimately, the campaign theme takes its cue from the 2007 Jeep Patriot. That’s because the all-new vehicle delivers the fun, freedom, utility and best-in-class Jeep 4×4 capability that allows anyone to “choose your adventure.”
“The Jeep Patriot is targeted at young, active men and women who always wanted a Jeep but couldn’t afford one,” John Plecha, Director - Jeep Marketing and Global Communications, said. “Now, these consumers can choose their adventure in a Jeep Patriot because it delivers the Jeep experience at an affordable starting price - $14,985.”
Among the key elements of the campaign are:
Media
From now until April 1, Jeep Patriot advertising will be prominent wherever there’s news about March Madness, the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Championship. For example, sports-themed banners about the Jeep Patriot will appear on virtually every Web site devoted to sports, including ESPN.com, SportingNews.com, SportsIllustrated.com, as well as the home pages of AOL and Yahoo!, among others. The two TV spots will get frequent airing on TV sports programming such as CBS Sports, College Sports TV, Fox Sports and College Hoops Network. Print ads already have appeared in USA Today and will continue during March Madness.
The Way Beyond Trail
The main characters are Gary, Srini and Jodi. (The same trio appears in the TV commercials for the 2007 Jeep Patriot.) Each online participant becomes the fourth member of the group of friends on a backwoods camping trip. The story starts around a campfire when Gary reveals an old family treasure map handed down from his uncle. The three friends, plus the viewer, decide they’ll be the ones to find it.
It is possible to complete the adventure without viewing all 44 scenes. Part of the challenge and fun is that some scenes are dead ends. However, players can simply go back and make a different choice to keep the story going. There is only one correct path that leads participants to the ending scene of the interactive film.
Participants can customize their experience by uploading photos and personal information that will reappear as embedded content within the film.
There is also a viral component. Participants have the option to provide an Emergency Contact person (name and e-mail address) in the event they get “lost.” On the first instance of encountering a dead end, an e-mail is automatically sent to their Emergency Contact, inviting them to try their own luck on “The Way Beyond Trail.”
TV Spot Descriptions
“Wolf” — At a riverside campsite, Gary and Srini pull a prank on Jodi by taking her canoe from the roof of her 2007 Jeep Patriot. As they head to the river to make their escape, Jodi can’t awaken her male partner. So she fires up the Jeep Patriot and pursues the pranksters on a path that goes parallel to the river. After driving through rugged terrain which the Jeep Patriot handles effortlessly, Jodi stops ahead of the fleeing canoe. On the opposite bank of the river she spots a wolf on a rock. She takes her forefinger and thumb and puts them in front of her face. She picks up the wolf with her fingers and drops it into the canoe. Terrified, Gary and Srini jump into the river and escape.
“Wake Up” — The interior features of the Jeep Patriot are highlighted as two campers load their gear into the rear of the vehicle. A third camper, however, is asleep in his tent. Nothing rouses him: not his friends raising the volume of the Patriot’s MP3 player, or pointing the flip-down speakers directly at the tent and blasting music. Finally, one of the campers takes his forefinger and thumb and puts them in front of his eye and picks up the guy’s tent. He lifts it over the water and dumps his friend into the lake.
“Wolf” will first air on March 15 during the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament. “Wake Up” debuts March 20. Both will run on sports, music, entertainment and news programming, on late-night shows, and on networks such as Fox, ABC, NBC, E!, MTV and FX.
“Animales” is the title of the TV campaign targeted at Hispanics. There are two Spanish-language 30-second TV spots scheduled to start airing in April on Univision, Telefutura, Galavision, ESPN Deportes, GolTV, LatiNation and Mun2.
“Mosquito” — A chameleon is interrupted by his friend the mosquito moments before he prepares for lunch. The mosquito explains how he noticed a new animal — the Jeep Patriot — in the forest. Intrigued, the chameleon follows and tries to make it his next meal. As the Jeep Patriot drives through the forest, showcasing the capability of its Freedom Drive II(TM) Off-road Package, the mosquito follows its every move. Just as mosquito begins his final approach the Patriot kicks up mud in his face and the mosquito flies blindly into a tree head first.
“Weasel” — An amorous weasel wanders through the forest and stumbles upon a new animal — the Jeep Patriot — which seems to be singing a beautiful song. The Weasel eagerly approaches the Patriot, admiring its classic angles and modern features, such as the rear-liftgate speakers which projects the beautiful song throughout the forest. The Weasel is overcome with emotion and falls in love with the Jeep Patriot.
“Family Tree” is a print ad in English and Spanish that will appear in such Hispanic publications as Billboard Latino, Futbol Mundial, Latino U, Urban Latino, Fox Sports en Espanol, ESPN Deportes, among others.
Print Ads
There are two versions of an ad called “Connect the Dots.” Each has a photo of the Jeep Patriot in a field of dots that are assigned to numbers. One set of numbers and dots is red, the other is blue. Readers can choose to connect the red or blue dots. Each yields a different image.
The other print execution is a full-page spread with a sticker insert. There are two versions of this ad. One spread shows a forest scene. It is divided by an insert that has stickers on both sides. The stickers are removable pictures of the Jeep Patriot, plus people, clothing and gear that would be found in a forest. Readers can remove the stickers and arrange them any way they want on the forest page. The possibilities for this version of “choose your adventure” are limitless. The second version of this ad uses a beach scene, with related stickers that also can be placed wherever the reader likes.
A sampling of the print placements includes sports publications (Sports Illustrated; ESPN, the annual March Madness Preview Section of USA Today), music (Rolling Stone, and Spin,), men’s lifestyle (Maxim, Details, GQ, Men’s Health,) outdoor/adventure (Surfer, Four Wheeler, Runner’s World) and women’s lifestyle (Jane, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan).

THE ALL NEW VOLVO XC70 – CAPABLE, SPORTY AND READY FOR ADVENTURE -
Categories: Manufacturers, New Vehicles -
Ian
@ 08:54:07 am

* Significantly enhanced levels of refinement and all road capability
* Offers unparalleled levels of athleticism, versatility and safety in the premium estate class
* Powered by a 185 PS D5 diesel and a 238 PS 3.2-litre petrol
* Prices announced in early June, UK showrooms in September
Volvo’s boldly styled and intelligently configured all new Volvo XC70 AWD (all-wheel drive) estate offers significantly improved levels of all-road-all-weather ability and an engaging driving experience combined with class-leading safety features, load-carrying versatility and refined passenger comfort.
Performance
The all new XC70 offers both performance and fuel economy with Volvo’s naturally aspirated 3.2-litre straight six-cylinder petrol engine and its second generation 2.4-litre five-cylinder D5 turbo diesel engine.
The D5 turbo diesel, with 185 PS and 400 Nm, packs a full technical punch and features double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder technology, an electronically controlled turbocharger, a maintenance-free particle filter, a more advanced multi-point injection system and an enhanced engine management system. It accelerates to 60 mph in 8.8 seconds (manual) and on to a 130 mph maximum speed.
The D5 is available as a 6-speed manual gearbox or Volvo’s six-speed Geartronic transmission, which gives the driver the choice of automatic or manual shifting.
Designed by Volvo in Sweden and built in Bridgend in Wales, the 3.2-litre naturally aspirated straight-six petrol engine is both powerful and amazingly compact, producing 238 PS and maximum torque of 320 Nm. The engine’s aluminium block and head are structurally optimised to balance low weight and stiffness. There are twin overhead camshafts and 24-valves (four per cylinder) to provide optimal engine breathing. Engine breathing is further improved by Volvo’s patented CPS (Cam Profile Switching) system that features two completely different intake cam profiles machined onto the same camshaft.
Available with Geartronic transmission only, the 3.2-litre powers 0 to 60mph acceleration in 8.1 seconds and achieves a 134mph top speed.
Driving Dynamics
Underpinned by advanced new chassis architecture, the all new Volvo XC70 delivers an agile and rewarding driving experience that combines exceptional driver control, outstanding ride comfort and secure road holding.
Extensive use of high-strength steels throughout the all new XC70 has boosted torsional rigidity by 15 percent compared to the previous model and particular focus on chassis technology, the suspension system and engine installation ensures that the XC70 delivers good stability and torsional rigidity.
The all new XC70 is also fitted with Volvo’s DSTC (dynamic stability and traction control), which enhances cornering stability and reduces the risk of a skid by utilising feedback from numerous dynamic sensors to reduce engine torque and apply carefully calculated braking.
Four-C, Volvo’s advanced active chassis technology with electronically controlled damper adjustment, is also available. “With an active chassis, the car’s driving properties improve in all situations,” says Volvo Cars XC70 Project Director, Tomas Ahlborg. “It becomes both safer and more entertaining to drive.”
Cross Country Capability
All road ability is a key XC characteristic and, combined with a stiffer chassis, the all new XC70 is equipped to offer dramatically enhanced cross country capability.
Volvo’s engineers and designers paid particular attention to the all new XC70’s ground clearance and wading depth as well as its ramp, approach and departure angles. With a ride height 74 mm (with 2 occupants) higher than the new Volvo V70 estate, the XC70 has an impressive wading depth of
300 mm and an effective ground clearance of 210 mm. Also, with ramp angles of 19.2° approach, 19.8° breakover and 24° departure, the new XC70 betters the outgoing model (16°, 18° and 20° respectively) in all three areas.
This ability to deal with adverse road conditions is enhanced by a hill descent control (HDC) system that regulates the vehicle’s speed on steep downhill gradients in all conditions. The electronic one-touch system – standard on both manual and automatic gearboxes – utilises the brakes to modulate
the amount of torque distributed to each, ensuring the Volvo maintains a steady 6 mph during its descent.
Touching either brake or accelerator pedal will speed up or slow your descent speed in all conditions. Simply press the HDC button to regain full manual control. The HDC system also works in reverse which makes it ideal for tricky manoeuvres such as when launching a boat on a steep slipway.
The all new XC70 is also fitted with Volvo’s responsive AWD with Instant Traction™ system, using an electronically controlled hydraulic clutch to instantly distribute torque to the wheels for the best possible grip in all conditions.
Another feature that enhances the off-road experience is the speed-dependent power steering option which, as its name suggests, delivers more servo assistance at low speeds and less as speeds rise. Ideal for low-speed manoeuvres when tackling slippery surfaces, there are three levels of assistance available and they can be adjusted via Volvo’s information and set-up system. To assist on tricky hill starts, the all new Volvo XC70 is fitted with an intelligent PPB (power parking brake) that automatically disengages when the accelerator is pressed and the car pulls away.
Sporty and luxurious
The car’s enhanced dynamic ability is complemented by athletic new styling. Its eye-catching new sporty design, headlined by its raked windscreen and tailgate angles, blacked-out side pillars and C30-inspired taillights, are complemented by its tough and practical off-road body kit.
Hard-wearing scratchproof protective cladding along the XC70’s flanks and around the wheelarches is complemented by chunkier redesigned bumpers as well as tough chromed front and rear scuff plates that shield the XC70’s nose and tail during more arduous off-road work. The all new XC70 models are also fitted with unique XC embossed roof rails as standard. These features, in combination with refined lines and contours, give the all new XC70 a more luxurious, elegant appearance.
“The dark-coloured plastic panels at the bottom are less obvious than on the current model. But as with exclusive outdoor clothing, the protection is placed exactly where it needs to be to withstand the rough stuff,” says Volvo Cars Design Director, Steve Mattin.
The XC design continues inside with unique leather interior colours, bold cross stitching on the seats, cross-brushed aluminium trim and mesh pockets at the rear.
Estate versatility
The all new Volvo XC70 marries its contemporary Scandinavian style with intuitive functionality, comfort and refinement.
The XC70’s revised tailgate design is not only a striking design feature, but results in an even larger loading aperture than before, and the boot’s size has grown by an effective 55 litres over the outgoing model, to a vast 575 litres. And the XC70’s 40-20-40 three-part split rear seat and foldable front passenger seat means 16 different seating combinations for unrivalled versatility in the sector.
The boot floor features adjustable load-securing anchorage points and aluminium rails to secure objects in transit, further helped by the integrated anchorage eyelets in the boot’s side panels. Those XC70 drivers who regularly transport heavy or bulky goods can opt for the innovative sliding load floor and optional powered tailgate to boost ease of loading even further.
Boosting usable interior cabin space has resulted in a 48 mm increase in rear legroom and a 21 mm increase in rear knee clearance. Front passengers now enjoy 30 mm of additional shoulder room, while the overall distance between front and rear passengers has been extended by 21 mm. The spacious XC70 cabin is enhanced by its sleek and slim centre console, intelligently configured dashboard and ergonomically correct layout of its controls.
The all new Volvo XC70 is equipped with a first class DSP (digital signal processing) audio system which features Dolby Pro Logic II Surround with adjustable sound pattern and the Premium Sound option offers loudspeakers from Danish audio experts Dynaudio. Integrated RSE system for rear passengers, the latest generation of RTI navigation system, MP3 player compatibility and optional subwoofers are also available.
Class-leading safety
As with all new Volvos, the XC70 is equipped with a raft of ground-breaking active and passive safety features to ensure that it's the safest car in its class.
Highlights include improved crumple zones that use differing strength steels to absorb energy during an impact, the same advanced WHIPS (whiplash protection system) as that found in the new S80 and an energy absorbing nose and bonnet.
Mindful of the XC70’s higher ground clearance, Volvo has positioned a lower cross-member to supplement the front suspension frame at the height of a conventional car’s bumper so that, in the event of a collision, it will strike the other car's protective structure and activate its crumple zone.
Using higher-strength steels in the XC70’s side panels significantly enhances the performance of the Volvo’s SIPS side impact protection, as do its new dual compartment side-impact airbags, which feature two separate chambers for the hips and for the chest.
Volvo’s innovative dual-stage integrated rear child booster seat tops the all new XC70’s list of family-oriented safety features. With two heights, this optional adjustable booster cushion is ideal for children between 95 and 140 cm in height and weighing between 15 and 36 kg. Force limiters on the seatbelts have been adjusted to provide the right amount of tensioning force for children.
A new extended IC (inflatable curtain) airbag, 60 mm longer, boosts child safety by providing superior protection for children of a wide range of heights and sizes.
The Volvo XC70 can also be equipped with a number of advanced electronic driving systems including Volvo’s award-winning BLIS (blind spot information system), HBA (hydraulic brake assist), OHB (optimised hydraulic brakes), ACC (adaptive cruise control with collision warning and brake support), active bi-xenon headlamps, radar-controlled collision warning, emergency brake lights, all-round laminated glass and Volvo PCC (personal car communicator), which is used to lock and unlock the car as well informing the owner if the alarm has been triggered or, using a heartbeat monitor, to detect if someone is in the car.

Since the introduction of the PV445 in 1953, Volvo has dominated the premium estate market. The first XC model was launched in 1996, inventing the cross-over estate concept, and has attracted global sales of around 40,000 units each year.
During its first full year of sales, Volvo expects to sell around 40,000 all new Volvo XC70 models worldwide, with the UK accounting for 2,500 XC70s – a sales figure that reinforces Volvo’s position at the top of the premium estate sector.
Prices of the all new XC70 will be announced in early June, with a September showroom due date and first customer deliveries in October this year. The current Volvo XC70 remains on sale until the autumn.

The Jeep brand is continuing its expansion into new territory with the European premiere of the new Jeep Patriot at the Geneva Motor Show this week.
The Jeep Patriot will be the new, entry-level price point for the Jeep brand in the UK when it launches this summer. Patriot combines the packaging and interior flexibility of an SUV with the performance, handling, fuel economy and price of a family hatchback.
Peter Lambert, Managing Director of Chrysler Group UK, said “You can’t escape the fact that the new Jeep Patriot looks like a classic Jeep – but there is nothing old-fashioned about the performance and fuel economy of this compact SUV or its state-of-the-art four-wheel drive system.
“The market place is changing and the Jeep brand is leading that change as the Compact SUV market grows. Our research shows that the Jeep Patriot appeals to younger customers that want more from their traditional family car – young families want a vehicle that looks different but still offers plenty of room and practicality, together with great performance and fuel economy.”
Safety is also increasingly important for customers and the Jeep Patriot is loaded with many standard safety features, including side-curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Electronic Roll Mitigation and the ‘Freedom Drive I’ full-time, active four-wheel drive system, all of which add to Patriot’s tremendous value.
Peter Lambert added: “Small family cars with four-wheel drive systems are becoming more sought after as they offer better handling and enhanced safety on the road. The higher seating position of the Patriot, together with the new four-wheel drive system that automatically switches from front to four-wheel drive if you lose traction, offers drivers a real advantage in everyday driving conditions. The Patriot is as much at home on wet and icy tarmac as on mud, sand or snow and still manages to achieve a class-leading 43.5 mpg*.”
Two Jeep Patriot models, Patriot Sport and Patriot Limited, will be offered in the UK and will be priced below the Jeep Compass Limited model. The Patriot range will launch in the UK in July 2007 with a VW-sourced 138 bhp 2.0-litre six-speed manual diesel engine and a 168 bhp 2.4-litre petrol engine with a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox.
* 43.5 mpg on the combined cycle with the 2.0-litre diesel engine.

· Freelander 2 TD4 diesel automatic makes Geneva debut
· New Freelander 2 personalisation programme introduced
· Improved cabins in Discovery 3 and Range Rover Sport for 2008 model year
· Due to the continued success and demand for our new TDV8 and TDV6 diesel engines, the sale of naturally-aspirated petrol models will cease from 2008 model year
· The 2007 Defender – with new 2.4-litre common rail diesel engine
Gaydon, Warwickshire, 2 March 2007 – Following on from the most important period of product launch for Land Rover and another record sales year, Land Rover will show its all-new product line-up at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show.
Making its debut at the show is the Freelander 2 TD4 diesel automatic. Using the same six-speed automatic transmission as the 3.2-litre i6 petrol Freelander 2, the TD4 is powered by the all-new 160 PS 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine.
It has a combined average fuel consumption of 33.2 mpg and as with all Land Rovers, the carbon dioxide generated by Land Rover’s manufacturing activities and UK customers' vehicle use for the first 45,000 miles has been balanced through an industry leading offset programme run by Climate Care.
The automatic transmission features Land Rover’s CommandShift for manual sequential gearchanging and a sports mode for more spirited driving.
The Freelander 2 TD4 automatic goes on sale in the UK in April 2007, starting from £22,305 on the road.
“Since sales of the diesel manual and i6 petrol model began in December 2006, demand for the Freelander 2 has been really encouraging,” commented John Edwards, Land Rover UK managing director. “And it is already a multi-award winner, picking up the BBC Top Gear SUV of the Year and What Car? Best Compact 4x4 awards. A tremendous achievement.”
For the personal touch, Land Rover has also introduced an accessories programme for the Freelander 2.

“Land Rover has a long tradition of allowing customers to order vehicles to suit their needs but this new programme allows the greatest degree of personalisation ever offered to Freelander customers,” Edwards added.
The list of options includes: 19-inch sports wheels, a sports styling pack, Audio Connectivity Module (ACM) for iPod/MP3 connectivity, Rear Seat Entertainment (rear screens and DVD player), body colour mirror caps and sill strips, all shown at Geneva.
For 2008 model year, the Range Rover Sport – Land Rover’s best selling vehicle worldwide in 2006 – offers new refinements and subtle cabin enhancements. A new Ebony colour centre stack is standard, an improved Brunel metallic finish replaces the Rhodium finish and dark stained Zebrano is available as a new wood finish. A new tan premium leather upholstery colour is now available, with improved carpet mats and a stainless steel tread strip.
8-way electric passenger seats and electric lumbar support adjustments for driver’s seats will be introduced on all top end SE and HSE spec vehicles and satellite navigation will become standard on all SE models.
The Discovery 3, winner of 95 international awards, is also upgraded for the 2008 model year.
For the first time, straight grain satin walnut or piano black wood finishes are available as standard on all HSE models, as are premium ruched leather seats, driver seat cushion pockets, eight-way passenger seat adjustment and powered lumbar support adjustment for the driver. Further upgrades across the model range include a more premium Ebony centre stack and centre floor console, ‘noble’ plating finish to facia air vents and other controls and silver plated finish to the speaker bezels.
Due to the overwhelming demand for Land Rover’s efficient Discovery 3 TDV6, and the 32 per cent more economical Range Rover and Range Rover Sport TDV8 models, the sale of naturally-aspirated petrol models will cease from 2008 model year. This means that Land Rover's UK diesel sales look set to exceed 90 per cent of our total this year.
Last but by no means least, the significantly enhanced 2007 Defender completes the line-up on the Land Rover stand featuring a new 2.4-litre common rail diesel engine, six-speed gearbox with wide ratio spread, a fully integrated facia, new seating configuration and high output heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.

Geneva Debut for the Audi Q7 4.2 TDI
326PS and 760 Nm of torque – Audi proudly presents the most powerful diesel SUV on the world market. A state-of-the-art eight-cylinder engine with common rail fuel injection and Piezo injectors not only stands out on account of its sheer output but also demonstrates outstanding efficiency: the 4.2 TDI achieves a combined fuel economy figure of 25.4mpg.
The Audi Q7 places the concentrated power of the V8 TDI, an engine with a displacement of 4.2 litres, into a vehicle concept that impresses with its versatile sportiness. Even at its debut, the Q7 model series set new standards in its segment. Now the 4.2 TDI is moving the bar even higher.
Under the bonnet of the new Audi Q7 4.2 TDI is the most powerful diesel engine the brand has to offer. The 4.2-litre capacity of the V8, which already powers the A8 luxury saloon, generates an output of 326PS and 760 Nm of torque at engine speeds between 1,800 to 2,500 rpm. The most powerful SUV on the market has the drivability of a sports car. The Audi Q7 accelerates from standstill to 62mph in 6.4 seconds and has a top speed of 146mph. These figures are also the new best marks in its segment.
The Audi Q7 4.2 TDI transmits its power through a six-speed tiptronic gearbox and a sportily tuned quattro driveline, which in normal situations splits propulsive force 40 percent to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear axle. Audi's "adaptive air suspension" is standard on this most powerful of diesels – it unites dynamic handling with the ride comfort of the luxury class.
The Audi Q7 4.2 TDI is also at the top of the tree with its standard convenience equipment. The leather design package gives the interior a noble feel.
The electric tailgate makes lighter work of loading. A new feature is the
Audi lane assist system, which emits a pulse to inform the driver before he inadvertently crosses a line on the carriageway.
The engine: concentrated pulling power
Like all the engines in the Audi Q7 series, the 8-cylinder diesel heralds from Audi's new V-engine family. With a displacement of 4,134 cc, the large TDI has a maintenance-free chain drive on the gearbox side for its four camshafts and ancillaries. The angle between the cylinder banks is 90 degrees, the cylinder spacing 90 millimetres, the overall length just 520 millimetres. The crankcase is made of the high-tech material vermicular graphite cast iron. This forms the basis for the light weight of the engine – just 257 kilograms.
The V8 TDI is a masterpiece of engineering. The best examples: the crankshaft is forged from chrome-molybdenum alloy steel; the cylinders are of cast aluminium. Low-friction roller cam followers actuate the 32 valves; electronically actuated flaps give the intake air into a defined swirl.
Two turbochargers with variable-geometry turbines provide solid torque even at low engine speeds while still allowing a high power output. Large charge-air coolers reduce the temperature of the compressed air. The common rail fuel injection system contains compact Piezo inline injectors that are extremely precise and fast switching. They are capable of up to five injection sequences per working cycle.
The 4.2-litre TDI develops 326PS at 3,750 rpm. Between 1,800 and 2,500 rpm it induces its impressive pulling power onto the crankshaft – 760 Nm of torque. The most powerful diesel engine in the SUV segment gives the Audi Q7 the sportiest performance of all diesels. The premium SUV sprints from 0 to 62mph in just 6.4 seconds. On the motorway it can reach a top speed of 146mph.
The driveline: dynamic character
The Audi Q7 4.2 TDI is equipped as standard with the six-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox. The dynamic shift program (DSP) manages the gearshifts, whereby it orientates itself to the driver's style and to the characteristics of the road. A special sport programme – the S programme – supports a particularly dynamic driving style. The driver can intervene at any time, either at the gear gate for the selector lever or at the optional paddles on the steering wheel. As the tiptronic in the Audi Q7 was designed for high torque from the very outset, it does not need to be specially reinforced to team up with the V8 diesel engine.
Like all Audi Q7 models, the 4.2 TDI has a self-locking centre differential with asymmetric/dynamic torque split. In regular operation, it transmits the drive force with a ratio 40:60 to the front and rear axles respectively. If needed, torque is distributed at varying ratios between the front and read axles according to the level of grip: optimum traction is provided at all times. This ultramodern quattro technology provides for sporty characteristics reminiscent of a rear-wheel drive vehicle, for exceptional agility and for a steering precision that is to the greatest possible extent free of influences from the driveline.
The running gear: sporty performance
The running gear on the Audi Q7 4.2 TDI supports this dynamic presence. And it superbly masters all of these challenges – whether in rough terrain or on the road, where handling characteristics, driving safety and comfort set the standards. Adaptive air suspension, fitted as standard, rounds off the outstanding character – the combination of pneumatic suspension and electronically controlled damping with dynamic roll stabilisation forms the perfect synthesis of sportiness and maximum rolling comfort.
The Audi Q7 4.2 TDI driver can set the adaptive air suspension to any of three maps, from very sporty to very comfortable. In addition, the system allows five ground clearance settings. Up to 205 millimetres of air under the vehicle (offroad mode) is usually enough even on demanding terrain. The rear can be lowered by 71 mm for comfortable loading.
The Audi Q7 running gear is characterised by its high degree of sophistication. All four wheels are independently mounted on double wishbones. The axle components are made largely of aluminium. The servotronic steering is distinctively direct and precise, giving a feeling of excellent road contact. The Audi Q7 4.2 TDI runs on sporty 18-inch alloy wheels with size 255/55 tyres. Behind them, the four brake discs are internally ventilated and generously dimensioned – 350 millimetres in diameter on the front axle and 358 millimetres on the rear axle. The front brake callipers employ 6-piston technology, like on a top sports car.
The equipment: intelligent luxury
The leather design package is standard on the new Audi Q7 4.2 TDI. It includes inlays in three different types of wood or aluminium, and seat upholstery in Cricket leather. The front seats are electrically heated as standard. An on-board computer, cruise control system and multifunction steering wheel enhance comfort for the driver. The much-praised "MMI basic" control system is also fitted as standard. A practical tool is the electrically driven tailgate, whose opening angle can be programmed.
A range of assistance systems makes driving in Audi's performance SUV even safer.
A new technology that is enjoying its debut in the Audi Q7 4.2 TDI is Audi lane assist. It informs the driver if the lane is inadvertently left upwards of a speed of around 40mph. If the system is activated and the driver has not indicated, then shortly before the vehicle crosses the line marking, which is detected by Audi lane assist, the system alerts the driver by making the steering wheel vibrate (only in conjunction with the 4-spoke multifunction steering wheel).
Optional Audi adaptive cruise control is a radar-supported cruise control system incorporating active distance control. If required it can be combined with the "braking guard" brake assist system.
Audi's "side assist system" employs radar technology to monitor the blind spot and inform the driver if it is dangerous to change lanes. The "Audi parking system advanced" uses a camera for the view to the rear. The aid lines on the monitor make parking an enjoyable task.
Numerous interesting features are available for the dynamic lines of the exterior and for the spacious interior of the 5.09-metre-long Audi Q7: 21-inch wheels, the "open sky system" glass roof or the rail system for the generous luggage compartment, which has a capacity of up to 2,035 litres. A deluxe climate control system is standard. The seats are extremely variable. Like all Audi Q7 models, the 4.2 TDI is available as a 5, 6 or 7-seater. A 4-seater version will be available at a later date.
The new Audi Q7 4.2 TDI is scheduled to open for UK order in April, and first deliveries are expected in late June 2007.

* New Scénic Conquest combines space and practicality of a compact MPV with more aggressive, rugged style of an SUV
* Revised chassis includes 20mm higher ride height and stiffened suspension - ideal for both city streets and country roads
* Choice of four engines - two diesel and two petrol, offering 106hp to 136hp
* Priced from £16,765 to £18,965
* Available to order from 1st June 2007
Never shy to explore new market territories, Renault is now gearing up for a new voyage of discovery with the launch of the Scénic Conquest. Combining the space and practicality of a compact MPV with much of the look and driving benefits of an SUV, the new model will be available to order in the UK from 1st June 2007, with prices starting at only £16,765, up to £18,965.
Increased on-road ability
Making its debut at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, Scénic Conquest is a car aimed at a wide range of customers, including those with a passion for leisure pursuits and the great outdoors. The new addition to the Scénic range is sure to have a broad appeal through its fusion of MPV practicality and low running costs, allied to the rugged look and greater on-road capability of an SUV.
Let’s be clear. Scénic Conquest is not trying to be a 4x4 SUV with off-road ability, as Renault will launch an SUV in 2008 based on its Koleos Concept. Countryside dwellers using unmade or poorly maintained roads and city slickers tackling giant potholes and speed bumps need the raised driving position and ride height with stronger suspension, but not the 4x4 transmission that comes with an SUV.
Scénic Conquest provides this increased level of on-road ability without the weight penalty, fuel economy reduction and CO 2 emission increase associated with SUVs. If you really don’t need four-wheel drive but like all the other abilities of an SUV then Scénic Conquest could be the answer, especially as it costs several thousand pounds less than equivalent-sized and equipped SUVs like the Land Rover Freelander and Toyota RAV4.
Adventurous looks
You couldn’t mistake Scénic Conquest for any other member of the Scénic range. Conquest is front wheel drive, yet nevertheless, will be able to take the rough with the smooth as its chassis has been adapted to cope with life away from the beaten track.
At first glance, the most obvious sign of the Conquest's rugged nature is its 20mm higher ground clearance than a standard Scénic. The car's taller stance should prove a boon for city dwellers tackling the urban jungle, as well as those who live in the country who would benefit from a better view of the road ahead when negotiating muddy tracks and B-roads with high hedgerows.
In addition to the increased ground clearance and twin skidplates protecting the underbody, the suspension has been modified to improve comfort on rough terrain. The front and rear dampers have an increased range of travel and smaller anti-roll bars have been fitted. Finally, the special settings of the ESP electronic stability programme and ASR traction control enhance Scénic Conquest’s all-terrain character.
At the front, the lower part of the bumper has a protective black graphite coating while the radiator grille and air intake have been revised and a satin chrome-finish skidplate shields the engine. Making the Conquest even more distinguishable from other Scénics, it features dark lens headlamp covers, 16” alloy sports wheels, while at the rear, the black graphite bumper incorporates a satin chrome-coloured skidplate.
Scénic Conquest’s profile also reveals its fondness for off-road adventure or city parking through chunky rubbing strips which protect the side bodywork, while the wheel arch inners are protected by black graphite plastic and it also features robust door sill guards. Finished in chrome and black, the longitudinal roof bars are ideally suited to transporting outdoor leisure equipment.
Scénic Conquest will be offered in a wide range of colours, one of which will be exclusive to this model – Cayenne Orange.
Subtle but distinctive interior
Inside Scénic Conquest, splashes of orange differentiate the cabin from other Scénics. The dark grey centre console features orange graphics which echo the contours of a map and hint at the car's adventurous nature, while other unique touches include the blood-orange seatbelts and stitching for the gearlever gaiter and steering wheel. The carpets are also protected by Conquest-badged rubber mats.
Based on the best-selling Dynamique trim level, Scénic Conquest costs £550 more but adds extra equipment in the form of rear parking proximity sensors, ESP and roof bars, worth £700 if bought separately. The parking sensors in particular should prove invaluable for urban driving and the school run, as well as avoiding trees and gateposts!
Adding a personal touch to Scénic Conquest, Renault has developed bespoke accessories that can be purchased as a range of kits. They include an interior bike rack, additional storage units, guards for the door and boot sills, a compartmentalised boot box and so on.
A major factor in Scenic’s sales success is its interior versatility. All of its hallmarks remain in Conquest, such as the rear row of individual seats which can be slid forward, back, folded or removed completely, plus the numerous cabin stowage cubbies, rear aviation tables and underfloor storage, particularly as there is no 4x4 transmission taking up extra space. Customers can add even greater flexibility by specifying extras such as the opening tailgate window, panoramic glass sunroof and sliding centre storage unit. The Conquest will not be offered in Grand Scénic guise.
Power to explore
Scénic Conquest is available with a choice of two economical petrol and two diesel engines, ranging in power from 106hp to 136hp. All versions come with six-speed manual transmission as standard.
The entry-level petrol, 1.6 VVT, develops 111hp at 6,000rpm and 152Nm of torque at 4,250rpm, with combined cycle fuel consumption of 37.2 mpg. The more potent 2.0 16V petrol engine produces 136hp at 5,500rpm and 191Nm of torque at 3,750rpm. On a combined cycle, it returns fuel economy of 35.3 mpg. On the diesel side, the 106hp version of the 1.5 dCi diesel, generates peak power at 4,000rpm and 240Nm of torque at just 2,000rpm, returning 54.3 mpg on a combined cycle and emits CO2 of just 138 grams per kilometre. The second diesel option - 1.9 dCi 130hp offers maximum performance at 4,000rpm and 300Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. Offering a particularly wide power band, this engine sips fuel at a rate of just 47.1 mpg on a combined cycle and emits CO2 of 159 grams per kilometre.

The Jeep® brand is expanding into new territory with the all-new Jeep Compass – a modern-styled compact Jeep that delivers a competitive package of size, performance and fuel economy.

The Compass extends the Jeep brand to compete for the first time in the compact sport-utility vehicle (SUV) segment and is the first Jeep vehicle to offer fuel economy in excess of 43 mpg, on the combined cycle with its diesel engine, which is best in class. Compass will also be the Jeep brand’s first front-wheel-drive-based product and also the first with a fully independent suspension for comfortable on-road ride and handling.
Peter Lambert, Managing Director of Chrysler Group UK, said “The Jeep Compass is designed to reach younger and female customers who may not have previously considered the brand but value the distinctive Jeep look and see four-wheel drive as a must-have on their daily drive. Customers are increasingly interested in family hatchbacks with four-wheel drive systems as they offer better handling and enhanced safety on the road.
“The new Jeep Compass offers a roomy interior, a choice of fuel efficient diesel and petrol engines and an all-new Freedom Drive 4WD system in a package the size of a Ford Focus.”
Freedom Drive I is a full-time, active four-wheel drive system that offers the driver tangible benefits in every day driving conditions such as wet and icy tarmac. The car operates in front-wheel drive for 90 per cent of the time and automatically switches to 4x4 when more traction is required.
“This family hatchback-sized car represents a new chapter in the history of the Jeep brand – the compact 4x4 segment in Western Europe is expected to increase to nearly 400,000 units by 2010, and this new car-based four-wheel drive vehicle means the Jeep brand is ideally placed to meet this growing demand.”
“The whole compact-4x4 segment is shifting – our competitors are pricing themselves out of the sub-£20,000 segment and we aim to fill this space this year.”
In the UK the Jeep Compass Limited model will launch in May 2007 with a VW-sourced 2.0-litre six-speed manual diesel engine and 2.4-litre petrol engine with a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox. The Jeep Patriot shares the Compass platform and engines, but has a more traditional Jeep look and design. The Jeep Patriot Sport and Jeep Patriot Limited models launch in July 2007 and will be the new entry-level price point for the Jeep brand (pricing to be confirmed). The Jeep Compass will be priced from £17,990.
THE NEW ANTARA – SUV STYLE AND QUALITY FOR LESS THAN £20,000! -

* Vauxhall’s new compact 4x4 starts at just £19,850
* Style, driving dynamics and quality aim to tempt buyers from larger SUVs
* Biggest selling model averages a hatchback-rivalling 37.7mpg
With its stylish looks, high quality interior and massive level of standard equipment, the new Vauxhall Antara is the sort of car which could start to make drivers of bigger SUVs start to think they’ve been short changed – especially since the Antara’s prices start at only £19,850 on-the-road.
On sale now and due to arrive in showrooms from July, the Antara comes in three distinctive trim levels, each offering comprehensive levels of standard equipment which could cost up to £6,000 if ordered as options on some rivals.
Even the entry-level Antara E has standard kit that you’d expect in a much more expensive car, and has a quality feel that makes some larger 4x4s look decidedly down-market. Included in the price is ESP, Intelligent Four-Wheel Drive, a Descent Control System, air conditioning, remote control ultrasonic alarm, front fog lights, silver-coloured roof rails, 17-inch alloys and a CD with MP3 compatibility and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

/>
Moving up to the Antara S, additional standard equipment includes 18-inch alloys, climate control, heated front seats, cruise control, Automatic Lighting Control, rain-sensitive windscreen wipers, heat-reflective windscreen, self levelling suspension and chrome detailing on the door handles and exhaust tailpipe.
The top model Antara SE is exceptionally well specified, with a DVD sat-nav, six-disc CD changer with MP3 capability, a built-in Bluetooth phone kit, xenon headlamps, leather seat facings, electro-chromatic anti-dazzle rear-view mirror and electrically foldable door mirrors, front and rear parking distance sensors and an on-board tyre pressure monitoring system.
The only option will be the innovative Flex-Fix integrated bike carrier system, as first seen on the New Corsa and priced at £475. This special rack slides out of the rear bumper in seconds and allows two bikes to be carried safely without having to worry about storing and fitting complicated roof bar systems or attaching complicated frames to the tailgate.
As well as the visible equipment, Antara promises to be a great car to drive, thanks to speed-sensitive power steering, Intelligent Four-Wheel Drive system and dynamically-tuned sports chassis. Whereas some SUVs have a tendency to pitch and wallow through bends, Antara has been designed to offer rewarding, car-like handling.
The Antara operates as a normal front-wheel drive car in everyday use, providing the sure-footed handling which most drivers are familiar with. The car automatically switches to four-wheel drive when the car’s ESP electronics sense that the extra traction is needed. As well as giving the driver greater reassurance, the set-up delivers economy benefits over permanent four-wheel drive systems – delivering 37.7mpg on the combined cycle for the 2.0CDTi manual and producing 198g/km of CO2 – comparable to similarly-sized hatchbacks and estates with petrol engines.
Antara E is available with a choice of a 2.4-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine and manual gearbox or a 2.0-litre CDTi 16v diesel with a manual or five-speed automatic gearbox. The Antara S and SE are available with the 2.0-litre CDTi engine with a manual or auto ‘box.
